(A guest post from two of California’s young Democratic leaders)
Last weekend, nearly 600 Young Democrats from across California descended upon Los Angeles for the annual California Young Democrats (CYD) convention in conjunction with the California Democratic Party (CDP) convention.
One of the highlights of convention was the ability to hear from and interact with elected officials and candidates. This year, the candidate that fired up Young Democrats the most was Senator Barbara Boxer. On Saturday, over 250 Young Dems showed up to support Sen. Boxer during her speech on the convention floor.

The speech was a strong progressive message that resonated with all convention delegates, but especially young people. Sen. Boxer stressed the importance of creating new green jobs, an issue of particular importance to young people (who have the highest unemployment rate of any age demographic). Health insurance reform was another issue raised that directly impact young Californians, who will now be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance plans until age 26.
The theme of this year’s CYD convention was “When Young Democrats Vote, Democrats win.” We believe that this slogan will ring true this November when many of the young voters who voted for the first time in 2008 for Obama turn out again to vote for candidates like Senator Boxer who support the President’s agenda.
In every corner of California young people are organizing to support candidates who are moving our state and nation forward. We are proud of the work Sen. Boxer has done on our behalf, and excited about going to work on her behalf in this election.
