LATINO LEADERS BACK BOXER

Applaud Boxer’s job creation agenda

LOS ANGELES — More than 100 Latino leaders from across California today announced their support for Senator Barbara Boxer’s re-election and became founding members of Latinos for Boxer.  The group comes from across the state and includes elected officials as well as community leaders representing labor, business, and law enforcement among others.

“The Latino community shares my view that our top priority must be creating jobs and getting our economy back on track with opportunity and fairness for all.  I am proud to have the support of so many Latino community leaders who are standing with me in this race,” Senator Boxer said.

Among Latino likely voters, Senator Boxer holds a 23-point lead over Republican Senate nominee Carly Fiorina, according to a July 2010 Field Poll.

“Barbara Boxer is a fighter for California, and we need her in the Senate now more than ever.  Her support of our clean energy economy and the 30-10 initiative to build mass transit more quickly is crucial to creating jobs,” said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

“Barbara Boxer has been an outspoken advocate for our community.  She understands our needs and has never been afraid to stand up for all Californians,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina.

“Barbara Boxer has stood with working families in the fight to ensure that they have fair wages and working conditions, health care, access to good public schools, and much more,” said Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO.

“Barbara Boxer fought for funding to put more police officers on our streets, and she’s worked to make sure that law enforcement officers have the resources we need to keep communities safe,” said Darrell Cortez, President of the California Latino Peace Officers Association.

“As a former Chair of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and a proud business owner, I believe Senator Boxer is the best choice for our state.  She continually supports opportunities for small businesses to grow and entrepreneurs to succeed,” said Griselda Barajas, owner and CEO of Griselda’s Ventures Inc. and the former Chair of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“Barbara Boxer has supported legislation to help homeowners avoid losing their homes to foreclosure and to put people back to work,” said Fresno County Supervisor Henry Perea.

Senator Boxer’s top priority is creating jobs and turning our economy around.  She has a specific plan that includes creating green jobs and training workers to make California the hub of the new clean energy economy.  Boxer supports ending tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas and instead giving tax breaks to small businesses and middle class families.  She is working to expand access to loans for small businesses that want to grow and hire.

A first generation American on her mother’s side, Senator Boxer has been a vocal advocate for policies to give all Californians an opportunity to achieve the American dream.  She has worked to improve educational opportunities for our students, including authoring a law that provides after-school programs for more than a million children and expanding access to college financial aid.

Senator Boxer supports comprehensive immigration reform that includes a legal path for those who have worked hard and built their communities.  During consideration of comprehensive immigration reform in 2007, Senator Boxer worked with a coalition of organizations – including MALDEF, Southwest Voter Education and Registration Project, and LULAC – to author amendments to create a fair process for undocumented workers to obtain legal status.  She is a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act.

Senator Boxer co-authored legislation to create a national commission to study and plan for a National Museum of the American Latino.  She wrote legislation to name a San Diego post office after labor and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez.  She is a member of the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, which is working to address issues of concern to the Latino community, including job creation.  More information about Senator Boxer’s record is available at http://www.barbaraboxer.com.

Barbara Boxer was first elected to the Senate in 1992 after serving 10 years in the House of Representatives and is running for re-election in 2010.  She is the only Senator to chair two committees, the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Ethics Committee.  She also serves on the Senate Commerce and Foreign Relations Committees.
