Money is good. Early action is better.
I’m Javier Angulo, and I am working on building a strong, vibrant coalition to reelect Senator Boxer. As the son of immigrants, an openly gay man, and a determined progressive, I can’t imagine losing Barbara Boxer’s voice and determination in the Senate. Right now we’re working on an exciting campaign to recruit 1 million Boxer supporters to pledge to vote for Senator Boxer.
For more than a decade, I’ve been involved in public education and electoral campaigns to both expand opportunities and rights and elect candidates that share my vision for a just and fair America. Which is why I joined the Boxer 2010 campaign late last year and hit the ground running, trying to keep one step ahead of our opponents. With the hustle and bustle of campaigning day-to-day, it’s always nice to leave the trenches for ‘friendly’ territory like the California Democratic Party E-Board meeting two weeks ago. It gave me a break from the fight to re-elect Boxer that’s been waged since 2004 and continued without reprieve ever since. Mixing with all the enthusiastic supporters reminded me that while these vitriolic right-wing attacks might work in some places, California is Boxer country for a reason. If all of California was like the people I met at the E-Board meeting, I’d have nothing to worry about. But I’ve been in politics long enough to know that anything can happen, and the best defense is great preparation.
This year, another mega multi-millionaire will likely seek to unseat our Senator. Carly Fiorina, who served a short 5-year stint at Hewlett Packard, may appear a bit messy as a candidate: ranked one of the worst CEO’s by Forbes; fired 25,000 employees while increasing her CEO compensation to an unfathomable amount; now under scrutiny by the Attorney General for not registering her business and foundation with the State of California.
But one thing she does have is MONEY, and lots of it. Although many of her gambles fell short of success, Fiorina is a risk taker to be taken seriously. With one swoop of the wand, her HP severance cash may match and even exceed the Senator’s hard-earned dollars. Money matters here in California, but cash in itself does not win elections. Ultimately, the key to our success will be an energized base coming out early and vigorously in support of our Senator, and then turning out all of their friends and neighbors to vote in November 2010.
This is why I invite all Democrats (and Independents and Republicans!) to join Senator Boxer in building an online network of 1 million Boxer supporters before September 30th. It is absolutely critical that we build a strong grassroots movement to reelect our Senator. Please tap into your networks to help us reach our goal.
This weekend I’ll be at the Courage Campaign training in East LA - Camp Courage East Los Angeles! Hope you’ll come up and introduce yourself if you are there.
