Boxer Hails Funding for More California Police Officers

July 29th, 2009 by Lucas

As budget shortfalls have swept across the state, the first responders on the front lines of our communities have been among those forced to shoulder the burden. That’s meant fewer police officers as early retirements collide with lower new-hire rates. And it’s meant longer response times and new challenges for existing officers as they’ve had to handle an increasing volume of very difficult work.

Which is why Senator Boxer yesterday applauded the White House announcement of more than $211 million to hire more police officers in California. As the state budget crisis threatens local budgets in every corner of California, we need all the money we can get to maintain and expand the number of officers on the street.

Senator Boxer has been a major supporter of the COPS program since 1994, which has already put 15,000 officers on the street in California alone. This new infusion of cash- as part of a national $1 billion element of the stimulus plan- will support 649 California officers. It’s a welcome boost amid the painful cuts coming from the state and local budgets that is one small but integral step towards turning things around.

I am all for more police but I would also like to see changes made that would simplify police work. How about a program to finish all of the backlogged DNA testing that is just laying around. How about outlawing any alcohol while driving. How about some cash for cameras in public parks. Lets prosecute criminal gang membership as a crime. Instead of prison how about labor camps so criminals can pay off their debt for forcing us to hire police to deal with them in the first place. Lets legalize marijuana and remove the profitability of drug dealing. I guess what I am saying is, isn’t about time we got smart about enforcement.

Wish you the best of health during this campaign. I would like you to add one item to your agenda: Make it mandatory for all food that contains GMOs to be labeled as such. This will show that you are interested in the health of all your constituents. Everyone needs to be aware of how to protect their health by eating smarter, excersizing more, and following good health procedures. When people take more responsibility for their own health, it could bring down the cost of health care for the whole country. Better labeling will help people to make wiser choices.

I hope you will consider making this happen.

Thank you. I have always admired how much you do that is beneficial for everyone. You certainly have my support.
