Vera Schultz, the “first lady of Marin,” was an institution in Marin County for more than six decades. She served on the Mill Valley City Council in the 40s and became the first woman elected to the Marin County board of supervisors in 1960- the same Board of Supervisors that would later launch Barbara Boxer’s political career.
On Sunday, the Marin Women’s Commission will gather for a 35th anniversary brunch celebration. Marking the occasion, the commission will honor Senator Boxer with the inaugural Vera Schultz Visionary Leadership Award.
The Women’s Commission was founded in 1974 “to work to promote equal opportunity, economic independence, and access to resources for Marin County women through advocacy, research and partnership with agencies that serve women.” Two years later, Senator Boxer was elected to the Marin Board of Supervisors and starting down the long road that led to the House of Represetatives and now the Senate.
The Senator has fought for equality for women throughout her career, and the Vera Schultz award is an extremely generous recognition of that work.
